is law school right for you?

Unlike Elle Woods, most of us don't just wake up and decide to become lawyers after a breakup. Although, maybe a few of us do. Instead, many must consider if the legal profession is right for them, and if law school is the correct steppingstone to their career and life aspirations.

I've spent a lot of time considering this over the past few months. I am passionate about law, but I've had to determine if this passion is just a philosophical and theoretical one, or if I truly want to pursue those queries through legal practice. It's a momentous and expensive decision to make. During my inquisition I've asked the following questions, and ultimately decided that yes, my passion is not just a passion, it is a livelihood. I hope that with these 5 questions (and sub-questions) you will discover a definitive answer for yourself as well.

  1. What do I love about law?

    1. Will I be able to integrate this love into my weeks in law school and beyond?

    2. If not, how does that make me feel about this path?

  2. Can I envision myself in the legal profession?

    1. If yes, and easily so, do I look happy?

    2. Why or why not?

  3. Gut check - If I got into my dream school today, and it was fully funded, what is my gut reaction?

    1. Is there any hesitation?

  4. What else am I really passionate about?

    1. Can this interweave with a legal profession easily?

      1. For example, I am really passionate about the world of fashion and design. I will be interweaving my passion with my legal career by studying business and IP law, and actively seeking positions where I can provide legal counsel to brands like Gucci, Fendi, and Rag & Bone, along with magazines like Vogue.

  5. Law school changes the way individuals think about their lives, work and interpersonal interactions.

    1. What characteristics, habits, or routines do I love about myself/my life right now?

    2. How are these aspects susceptible to change during law school?

    3. What boundaries would I need to preserve these parts of myself?

    4. Do those boundaries feel doable?
