What to buy before starting law school

Let's be honest, who doesn't love curating the cutest collection of office supplies? Prepping school supplies for your next (or first!) semester of law school is perhaps even more fun. This post provides a wonderful list of essential items for your legal studies, along with some fun accents Elle would definitely approve of.

  • Highlighters

You can buy this necessary item in many colors from basic to adorable pastels. I love this legal briefing highlighter star that comes prelabeled for case study assignments.

  • A book stand

The perfect accessory for late night study sessions because it helps you stay focused and comfortable.

  • Mini office supply set

I've used a set like this countless times in the office and at school to staple documents last minute or help out a classmate.

  • Monthly, weekly and daily planners

While most planners come with all three options built in, I appreciate having a white board with a week and/or month layout for a forward-looking overview of assignments and deadlines so I don't miss a single event.

  • Pens, pencils, and a cute carry pouch

Never be caught without a writing utensil - you never know when you may need one. Also, what better way to make friends in class than saving someone whose forgotten a pen for the exam. Bonus if its fluffy and pink.

  • Binders and organization for your class notes

I like to make study guides from my notes with common questions asked in class by myself, students or the professor; or questions I've asked and gotten answered in office hours. I place these guides at the front of each class section as a quick reference/overview of the most essential topics.

  • Transparent sticky notes

These special stickies allow you to write directly in textbooks without marking up the book, which is especially helpful if you're borrowing books from your university legal library.

  • Legal pad and/or binder for note taking

I believe in taking notes by hand - either during class for later transcription into OneNote, or vice versa. It is one of the best ways to review day-of so you can internalize class content, write questions about concepts you're a little fuzzy on, and have a focused and productive follow up with your professor during office hours. A legal pad helps you do this quickly and easily.

  • A bag for class!

This is a personal choice and should fit your needs and style. I prefer to carry a large Kate Spade tote as it provides easy access to my laptop and supplies, and matches my style. Many friends prefer a Herschel's or Swiss Army backpack instead, or a classic Coach briefcase.
